The Rocher des Doms, birth of the city

Bordering the river who carrying rainwaters and snows from the mountains, heart of rock where was born the oldest city of France, "le Rocher des Doms". One discovered there several years ago, a stele testifying of a human presence on this place, there is more than 4.000 years ago. During the antiquity, many persons are established there and built an oppidum. We told that the "Cavares" took place in this strategic site, benefitting of the waterway to practise exchanges with the large and influential "Massalia". The name of Avignon would come from "Aouenion" who could be translated into Celt by "city of the violent wind" and into Ligurian by "lord of the river", this one being the most probable interpretation.
