La tour de Philippe Le Bel au bord du Rhône. Le roi commanda de l'ériger en 1297 afin de défendre le royaume de France.Autrefois, la tour était entourée de fortifications aujourd'hui disparues et le fameux pont Saint-Bénezet reliait la grande cité d'Avignon jusqu'à ce premier bastion du royaume, à proximité du village de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon.

The "tour de Philippe Le Bel" (Philippe Le Bel's tower) at the edge of the Rhone river. The king ordered to set it up in 1297, to defend the kingdom of France.
Formerly, the tower was surrounded by fortifications now disappeared and the famous Saint-Bénezet's bridge connected the great city of Avignon to this first bastion of the kingdom, near the village of Villeneuve-lez-Avignon.
