Malgré le temps incertain, la vue y est magnifique : on peut voir sur la gauche au premier plan, le Pont Bénezet, plus célèbre sous le nom de "Pont d'Avignon" et à l'arrière-plan se dessine la silhouette sombre de l'un des géants de la Provence, le Mont Ventoux. Au centre de l'image, on reconnaît le gigantesque Palais des Papes, ancienne demeurre papale et le Petit Palais, autre splendeur sur les flans du Rocher des Doms. Les remparts entourrent depuis plusieurs siècles l'ancienne ville.

Magnifique et impressionnant. Le feu d'artifice aura lieu en début de nuit au-dessus du mythique et très célèbre Pont d'Avignon.

Le très célèbre Pont d'Avignon ou Pont Saint-Bénezet qui relie les deux rives du Rhône, la cité papale à la cité royale de Villeneuvelez-Avignon.
Le pont fut détruit et reconstruit plusieurs fois jusqu'à ce qu'on l'abandonne définitivement aux caprices du fleuve au XVIIe siècle. La légende veut que le jeune Benezet, berger en Ardèche, entendît un matin la voix de Dieu lui demandant de construire un pont au-dessus du large fleuve. Ainsi, le gamin se dirigea vers la ville d'Avignon, guidé par un pèlerin et réussi, à réunir les fonds pour ce chantier auquel personne ne croyait !
Le pont fit passé bien des hommes, les assista dans les oeuvres de commerce ou encore de guerres, d'invasions et de folies pendant plus de 500 ans. Aujourd'hui, nombreux sont ceux qui connaissent cette construction d'architecture romane peuplée de chapelles à la mémoire du saint ou de ses mécènes par une chanson. Une chanson qui trotte dans toutes les têtes de ceux qui l'arpentent, surplombant le Rhône majestueux s'écoulant des pentes des Alpes depuis des millions d'années, chanson qui accompagne les visiteurs venus admirer ce grand oeuvre au passé à moitié effacé et à la mémoire retrouvée.

Point de vue d'une petite rue qui conduit à l'entrée de l'église Saint Pierre. Face à elle une maison se réchauffe et s'imprègne de Soleil. À l'arrière-plan, on aperçoit une partie du grand et massif Palais des Papes. Le clocher de l'église s'élance vers le ciel bleu alors que l'ancien palais écrase par ses dimensions toutes les maisons du quartier. Dialogue des pierres et du temps, les formes se superposent et se recomposent.

Dans la cour du Palais du Roure. Il fut commandé par le florentin Pierre Baroncelli en 1469, qui venait d'acquérir deux maisons et la taverne qui se trouvaient là et confia le chantier à un certain Antoine Collin qui a travaillé, entre autres, sur le magnifique "Petit Palais" de style Renaissance. Au début du XXe siècle, le poète et écrivain Fréderic Mistral, fervent médiateur de la culture provençale et conteur de sa mémoire, s'éprit de la superbe demeure et lui donna le nom de Palais du Roure ou Palais du Chêne. Jeanne de Flandreysy la racheta en 1918 et la sauva de l'oubli, y établissant "un foyer de culture méditerranéenne", repris plus tard par la ville.
Ce qui fait la magie de ce lieu, c'est sa situation, à la dérobée, soudainement visible dans l'interstice d'une petite rue. Si on passe trop vite, on ne le remarque pas, la rue est sombre et seule la lumière chaude présente dans la cour au-delà d'une porte entrebâillée et dont le cadre en pierre est magnifiquement sculpté, nous la fait connaître. Et alors, on ne peut être qu'émerveillé et ébloui, un bijou d'architecture qui nous fait revivre le XVe siècle. Un lieu, au détour d'un bout de rue, discret et pourtant si remarquable et beau. Fragment de la Renaissance toujours debout et riche de ses trésors cachés.

In the court of the Palais du Roure. It was ordered by the Florentin Pierre Baroncelli in 1469, who had just acquired two houses and the tavern where it is and entrusted the building site to a certain Antoine Collin who also worked on the splendid “Petit Palais” of Renaissance style. Quand on emprunte la Rue Peyrollerie, on longe les très hauts et impressionnants murs sud de l'immense Palais des Papes, on se croirait presque en montagne, entouré par les rochers, sur un chemin escarpé, pavé et cabossé. Ou alors, dans une infractuosité entre deux falaises ... L'endroit est étonnant et d'une très grande beauté. Ci-dessus, le clocher de l'église Saint - Pierre, se glisse et se hisse dans un ciel d'un bleu lavé par les vents violents qui soufflent depuis plusieurs jours, de part et d'autre, les bâtiments imitent la pierre et les rochers sur lesquels ils se sont accrochés, inébranlables et imprenables. Le bleu s'empare du paysage et les pierres se font face, poursuivent leur dialogue depuis plusieurs centaines d'années. Quand on se promène dans la longue et rectiligne Rue de la République, on ne peut s'empêcher de remarquer un magnifique bâtiment baroque. Nous voyons ici une partie de la façade et du mur sud de ce qui était autrefois la chapelle du collège des Jésuites, construite en 1620 et qui est devenue, aujourd'hui, le beau Musée Lapidaire qui expose la collection d'Art Antique du Musée Calvet, dans une ambiance joyeuse de salle des trésors d'un archéologue passionné. Remarquable édifice, qui n'est pas sans évoquer la Rome Baroque, qui reçoit la lumière chaude du Soleil les fins d'après-midi.
Quand on prend la rue au pied de son flan sud, on découvre alors un passage suspendu et on se faufile ensuite vers le Musée Angladon et la somptueuse Bibliothèque Ceccano.
La Rue de la République est une des plus fréquentée d'Avignon, où l'on trouve de nombreuses boutiques, en plus de chef-d'oeuvre architecturaux de l'âge baroque.

When we walks along the long Rue de la Republique, we can noticing a splendid baroque's building. We can see here a part of the frontage and southern wall of that was, formerly, the Chapelle du collège des Jésuites, built in 1620 and that became, now, the beautiful Musée Lapidaire who exposes the collection of Antique Art from the Musée Calvet, in a merry environment of a treasures's room of an impassioned archaeologist. When we follows the street at the foot of the southern blank, we discovers a suspended passage and, then, we find the Musée Angladon and the sumptuous Bibliothéque Ceccano.

Une gargouille agrippée à la flèche de la très belle église Saint Pierre. Celle-ci aurait été maintes fois reconstruite, faisant remonter au VIIe siècle la première construction, on raconte en effet qu'elle aurait abrité les tombeaux des premiers évêques de la ville. Celle qu'on peut découvrir aujourd'hui date de l'an 1358, début des travaux tandis que le clocher est plus tardif, il fut édifié plus d'un siècle après, en 1495. Les "bêtes" sont toujours là veillants à rejeter l'eau de pluie et aussi à chasser tout être maléfique essayant d'aborder l'antre sacré. On rencontre de nombreuses gargouilles sur les édifices gothiques à travers la France et les pays voisins peuplés de cathédrales.

Une très jolie place, en cours de restauration, où l'on peut admirer la superbe église du couvent des Célestins et d'admirables demeures datant du XVI ème et XVII ème siècle. Un endroit tout imprégné de lumière, de calme, de douceur, agréable pour rêver et lire les récits des habitants du quartier.

Photo prise au pied du mont Andaon. Ce rocher accueillit les religieux de l'abbaye Saint André et devint, plus tard, un bastion du royaume de France, guettant les inconnus et les ennemis du haut de ses tours imposantes.
On voit une petite partie des remparts qui regardent en direction du nord-est. C'est en ce lieu mythique que s'établit le fort Saint André. Chaque pierre fait encore écho de l'histoire qui se déroula durant de longs siècles sur cette falaise imprenable et légendaire, ceinte de murs épais et de tours, aujourd'hui, abandonnées.

La chapelle de l'Oratoire construite au XVII ème siècle et restaurée récemment, éclatante, régalant les yeux de son style baroque, habillée de la lumière, aujourd'hui particulièrement saisissante. Le Mistral, une nouvelle fois, nous fait chavirer sur les trottoirs, nous rafraîchit et chasse les poussières et les nuages du ciel.
Le ciel est d'un bleu resplendissant et c'est un plaisir de marcher dans les rues pleines de cette lumière du Soleil, réfléchi et multiplié avec plaisir par les différents bâtiments de la ville.

Cannes n'est pas très loin, quelques centaines de km pour être sur la Côte d'Azur et tremper le pied dans les eaux parfois calmes et douces, parfois tumultueuses et déchaînées du cinéma ... Le film "Volver" de Pedro Almodovar s'affiche partout et c'est toujours la surprise quand on croise le regard de la sublime Peneloppe Cruz. Je fus saisi par ses yeux noirs qui percent la nuit colorée sur la place de l'Horloge, qui est en quelque sorte le centre nerveux de la ville où se tiennent presque côte à côte l'Opéra-Théatre et l'Hotel de Ville. Le cinéma fait son apparition dans tous les recoins de notre vie.

Apollo, guettor of snake at the Musée Lapidaire

Torse d'Apollon Sauroctone, "Apollon, guetteur de serpent". Cette sculpture magnifique est une copie d'une oeuvre originale du grand et célèbre maître grec Praxitèle qui le représenterait appuyé contre un arbre tenant un lézard dans la main. On peut la découvrir et l'admirer dans le merveilleux petit musée consacré à l'antiquité, le Musée Lapidaire, dans la présentation "la Gréce Retrouvée".
Ce chef-d'oeuvre fut restauré récemment et appartient à la fabuleuse collection du Musée Calvet. Elle fut découverte sur l'île de Mélos puis achetée par des collectionneurs passionnés par l'art de l'antiquité grecque.

Chest of Apollon Sauroctone, “Apollo, guettor of snake”. This splendid sculpture is a copy of an original work of the great and famous Greek master Praxiteles who would represent him supported by a tree holding a lizard in the hand. We can discover it and admire it in the marvellous small museum devoted to antiquity, the Musée Lapidaire, in the presentation "la Gréce Retrouvée".
This masterpiece was restored recently and belongs to the fabulous collection of the Calvet Museum. It was discovered on the island of Mélos then bought by collectors impassioned by the art of Greek antiquity.

A part of the rampart, the rue des teinturiers along the Sorgue

Au bout de la rue des teinturiers, l'une des plus agréables et anciennes rues d'Avignon où affleurent de magnifiques empreintes de l'histoire, on bute sur les remparts, très bien conservés, qui ceignent la vieille ville. Nous sommes intra-muros, à l'intérieur de cette ceinture de pierres toujours là, vaillante et protectrice, solide et magnifique depuis le XIV ème siècle. Le cours d'eau que l'on aperçoit est la Sorgue qui prend sa source à Fontaine de Vaucluse. La rivière emplissait autrefois les douves des remparts et suit, en partie, la rue des teinturiers pour se perdre dans le sol de la ville moderne, disparaître sous nos yeux et se taire, engloutie ou bue par les pavés assoiffés.

At the end of the rue des teinturiers, one of the most pleasant and old streets of Avignon where we can see some splendid prints of the history, we arrive in front of the ramparts, preserved very well, who gird the old city. We are intra-muros, inside this belt of stones still there, valiant and protective, solid and splendid since the XIV th century. The river we can sees is the Sorgue who takes its source in Fontaine de Vaucluse. The river filled up the ditches of the ramparts formerly and follows, partly, the rue des teinturiers to lose itself in the ground of the modern city, disappearing under our eyes and keeping silent itself, absorbed or drunk by the thirty's paving stones.

Exploring the museums by night

Tous les musées étaient ouverts ce soir, attirant un public nombreux, parcourant dans la nuit douce les lieux qui racontent les histoires de la ville. Sur la photo ci-dessus, il y a ceux qui profitent de la vue sur l'impressionnant Palais des Papes (hors champ sur la photo, sur le côté droit) pour dîner en terrasse et ceux qui cheminent vers le Petit Palais pour découvrir les richesses de la collection de peinture italienne.
La France et l'Europe organisaient aujourd'hui "la Nuit des Musées", invitant tout le monde à venir se perdre dans le dédale des expositions et des oeuvres d'art. Bonne ambiance dans la ville en ce début de nuit vibrante et abandonnée aux rêveurs. Mélange de culture et de vie nocturne semée d'étoiles et d'envies de voir sous un autre jour, les oeuvres qu'on aime.

All the museums were open this evening, attracting many publics, traversing in the sweet night the places who tell the stories of the city. On the photograph above, we can see those who benefit of the sight on the impressive "Palais des Papes" (except field on the photograph, at the right side) to have diner in terrace and those who walk towards the "Petit Palais" to discover the richnesses of the Italian painting's collection.
France and Europe organized today “the Night of the Museums”, inviting everyone to come to lose himself in the maze of the exposures and the works of art. Good ambient in the city at this beginning of the night vibrating and lose itself to the dreamers. A barge on the Rhone and the mythical Mount Ventoux

Fin d'après-midi sur les eaux bleues du Rhône où vogue à contre-courant une péniche. On distingue à l'horizon, la masse sombre au sommet blanchi et dégarni du Mont Ventoux. Mythique montagne de la Provence, solitaire et dominant toute la vallée du fleuve semé de milliers de coteaux de vignes et de collines rocailleuses, de garrigues parfumées, montagne chantée par les poètes, habitée de créatures de légendes et sanctuaire d'une nature à demi sauvage.
Le point de vue du haut de cette montagne est magnifique, quand le temps est clair comme aujourd'hui, que le ciel est balayé et rincé par le vent, on peut voir jusqu'à la Camargue et la mer méditerranée. Cette très vieille montagne culmine à plus de 1 912 m et se voit du Luberon et des Alpilles. Son sommet est érodé depuis des centaines de millions d'années par le Mistral qui descend des Alpes et s'engouffre dans la vallée du Rhône, souffle violemment à en transformer le sommet en un étrange paysage lunaire. Le fleuve, lui aussi, coule depuis des millions d'années et a enrichi le sol, apportant à cette terre brûlante et mélangée des eaux et des roches de la montagne, que le vignoble vient traire aux vendanges, un des meilleurs vins plein de grandes qualités.

The remains of the tower of Philippe Le Bel at the edge of the Rhone

La tour de Philippe Le Bel au bord du Rhône. Le roi commanda de l'ériger en 1297 afin de défendre le royaume de France.
Autrefois, la tour était entourée de fortifications aujourd'hui disparues et le fameux pont Saint-Bénezet reliait la grande cité d'Avignon jusqu'à ce premier bastion du royaume, à proximité du village de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon.

The "tour de Philippe Le Bel" (Philippe Le Bel's tower) at the edge of the Rhone river. The king ordered to set it up in 1297, to defend the kingdom of France.
